UV Radiation and COVID-19 Inactivation
It is well known that UV light can destroy various germs and viruses. This includes COVID-19, or SARS-CoV-2, which is currently causing a severe outbreak. Since it belongs to the coronavirus family, experiments using related coronaviruses and UV light have concluded that a proper dosage of UV radiation can indeed eliminate 99.99% of the virus within an optimal timeframe. Depending on the intensity or concentration of the UV-C light, exposure times can range from 10 to 30 minutes; with high-intensity UV-C, it takes only about 5 minutes. Although the specific strain used in these tests was not SARS-CoV-2, the structural similarities across the coronavirus family provide a solid guideline to conclude that UV light can effectively kill COVID-19.

Dual-Action System: UV and Ozone ($O_3$)
We combine UV radiation and ozone gas to sanitize pool water instead of relying on chlorine. This method is much safer for swimmers and their skin, as it leaves zero chemical residues harmful to humans and contains no carcinogens.
Our system utilizes two distinct types of UV wavelengths:
-
185 nm UV: Eliminates Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and reduces algae growth.
-
254 nm UV: Eradicates bacteria, viruses, and fungi without the need for additional chemicals.
Ozone Integration and Seasonal Maintenance
Ozone gas is injected and mixed into the pool water via a Venturi system to oxidize all pollutants and destroy bacteria, viruses, mold, and algae.
While UV radiation leaves no residual effect in the pool after the water passes through the reactor, dissolved ozone remains active in the pool for 15–40 minutes, depending on the water temperature (colder water allows ozone to dissolve longer). Therefore:
-
During Cold Seasons: In cooler seasons (temperatures below 20°C) with no direct sunlight, there is no need to use an algaecide solution.
-
During Summer: Under direct summer sunlight, algae may still accumulate because dissolved ozone only lasts 15–40 minutes. Consequently, it is highly recommended to add a copper sulfate solution at a concentration of 0.5 grams per 1,000 liters once a week to prevent algae production.
Applications and Multi-Wavelength (OUV) Advantages
A UV wavelength of 254 nanometers (nm) is exceptionally effective at destroying microorganisms, such as airborne and waterborne bacteria, viruses, yeast, and mold. Germicidal lamps are widely used in air and water purification across the food and beverage industry, drinking water treatment, pure water systems, medical applications, room air disinfection, and wastewater treatment. Furthermore, the germicidal properties of 254 nm UV can also be used for ozone destruction to reduce dissolved ozone in water or dispersed ozone in the air.
Standard UV-C systems that produce peak 254 nm radiation help eliminate health issues associated with chlorine. These issues occur when free chlorine reacts with organic matter like sweat, body oils, and urine (forming chloramines). However, our OUV system differs from conventional UV-C setups; it features a broader multi-wavelength UVC output spanning both 185 nm and 254 nm. This expanded spectrum can eliminate all types of chloramines (mono-, di-, and tri-chloramines).
Results and Water Quality
After just a few days of operating the UV system, combined chlorine levels typically drop below 0.1 ppm or less. This eliminates health issues such as itchy skin, burning red eyes, harsh chlorine odors, and corrosive properties. The pool water transforms into a sparkling, crystal-clear state.
Our OUV system also provides an enhanced level of disinfection, protecting against chlorine-resistant microorganisms like Cryptosporidium and Giardia. These pathogens possess a thick outer shell that makes them highly resistant to traditional chemical disinfection. By introducing ozone into the water, the system oxidizes ammonia and nitrogen compounds. The longer the system runs, the more ammonia and nitrogen the ozone destroys.
Ozone has been used for algae control for many years with excellent results. When compared to other strong oxidants—such as potassium permanganate, chlorine, and hydrogen peroxide—ozone achieves superior results in a much shorter timeframe. The combined UV sterilizer and ozone system controls algae formation perfectly. Ozone can reduce all types of algae by more than 95%, effectively combating growth while maintaining superb water quality. Marine operators have long recognized and accepted the undeniable advantages of ozone systems, making ozone the most effective natural bactericide available.
